How Often Should You Have Your Dog Groomed

Once you took on the responsibility of taking care of a dog, there are many things you have to set time for to make sure your pet remains healthy and strong.

Aside from scheduling routine checkups for your dog, you also have to set a regular schedule when your dog should be groomed.

One of the most common questions new dog owners share the same question: “How often should we groom our dog?”

The answer to this question will depend on the type of dog you have and the type of coat your dog has. Generally speaking, the more amount of hair a dog has, the more frequently it needs to be groomed. If this is your first time to have a pet dog and you’re not familiar with how to bathe or groom your dog properly, the best thing for you to do is to take your dog to a professional dog groomer.

Unlike humans who need to take a bath frequently, the most times a dog should get a bath is once every three months. Yes, it might not sound adequate, but excessive bathing of dogs can actually harm them. Dog coats contain natural oil that serves as protection from skin irritation. Bathing your dog too much will strip off their coats of this natural oil.

The general rule that a dog should be washed once every three months is applicable to dogs with thick or long coats. The thicker or longer the coats, the more prone it is to be matted and tangled.

For short-haired dogs, though, you can bathe them twice a year.

But just because you don’t bathe your dog as often doesn’t mean you’ll just leave them uncared for. You still have to brush your dog’s coat. If your dog has long or thick coat, you can brush it once a day. For short-haired dogs, you can brush them twice a week, or as soon as you notice that their coats are a little bit out of place.

Nail trimming should be done by a professional – especially if you have no prior experience and knowledge of trimming dog’s nails properly. Since some dogs have nails that grow faster than others, you have to be observant on this one. But typically, dogs need to have their nails trimmed once every month.
